Our Founders

 

NIVEDITA CHANDRAPPA: Nivedita is  the Founder of Wishwas and  its Executive Director. Ms. Chandrappa is a Certified Television producer who produced a weekly series called “Asian Indian Immigrant Experience ” for  Queens Public Television. She has won community service awards from QPTV as well as from the Bangladeshi community.  She is certified by “AIDS TO ARTISAN” in a market readiness program for cooperatives. She has been an an advocate for women’s issues since her college days, and she has  passion and concern for the women who are first generation immigrants in New York City. She has worked extensively with grassroots groups in India and the United States  and has hands- on experience in grassroots organizing.

Through volunteering in various women’s organizations, she was able to identify the lack of  an economic support system for low-income women who face domestic violence or many other issues. Nivedita Chandrappa worked for over 5 years to build Wishwas, beginning at the grassroots level.

Ms. Chandrappa has a fellowship through Green Faith,  an organization for environmental advocacy. She believes in interfaith work and has been involved in various interfaith events and activities. She has a B.A. in Journalism, an  M.A. in Public Relations and Advertising.  She is pursuing a certification course from “CUNY-Murphy Institute” for Advanced Labor Relations Study. She is currently employed by the City of New York.

NIMET DEGIRMENCIOGLU:  Nimet is a co founder of Wishwas who has relentlessly helped to build the organization.  She is a Brand Ambassador for REBORN by SOHAM DAVE, an eco fashion clothing line. The line is merchandised in New York and produced in India by local artisans, creating a cottage industry of women entrepreneurs.  The company won the Innovation USA award for their lofty vision and aesthetic in sustainable fashion from Ethical Fashion Forum in London. {Ethicalfashionforum.com.}  Nimet co-leads the NYC Fair Trade Coalition and is  a spokesperson for promoting fair trade practices and encouraging collaboration.  NYCFTC organizes various new platforms such as educational panels, Fair Fashion Runway show and markets to increase awareness of Fair trade in the city.

She has a master’s degree in Global Fashion Management (GFM), from FIT, and studied textile engineering in her native Turkey.
